BEST ACTRESS 1961: The super-stardom of Elizabeth Taylor's personal life, compounded by the flourishing of tabloid magazines that were no longer controlled by movie studios, led to a new level of celebrity obsession that Fellini nailed early on with his 1960 extravaganza La Dolce Vita; you could pooh-pooh it, like Brando being demonized for all the excesses of Mutiny On The Bounty's runaway production costs, but there was also room made for the glory of a number of screen goddesses like Taylor who were as admired for their acting skills as they were for their ability to light a paparazzo's camera on fire, and few of them were as dazzling as SOPHIA LOREN. Making her mark in pale fifties film fare as the token exotic wonder (Boy On A Dolphin), the woman born Sofia Scicolone to a single mother survived a childhood in war-torn Naples to become, at first, the star of photo pictorials before moving up to the odd Italian B-movie where, under the name Sofia Lazzaro, she attracted the attention of producer Carlo Ponti. The man would become her husband and manage an incredible career that put the newly renamed Loren at the top of the pyramid of the European actresses who dazzled American audiences in the sixties (Gina Lollobrigida, Claudia Cardinale and Capucine among them). To see her in films like Yesterday Today And Tomorrow is to witness an amazing actress at the height of her powers, so it's kind of a shame that she won the first acting Oscar to go to a non-English performance for TWO WOMEN, yet another movie about a sacrificing mother. What makes it a respectable choice, however, is that Loren can play a low-class villager without ever being patronizing about it (or according to my mother, without much effort), she wiped off that Egyptian eye makeup and let those beehive hairdos down and, particularly under de Sica's direction, really became the common folk without ever seeming like a movie star who was purposely drabbing it down for awards attention.
