BEST MUSIC 1960: The bubbly Greek hit that had audiences flocking to see Melina Mercouri as an idealistic Piraeus prostitute also produced one of the songs most associated with my heritage (I remember the janitor at my grade school singing it in the hallways): in Greek, it's called "The Boys Of Piraeus", but in English the song's title and lyrics were written to reflect the title of the Jules Dassin's delightful post-blacklisting movie NEVER ON SUNDAY, and the musical score earned MANOS HADJIDAKIS the first Best Song Oscar to go a song written in a foreign language. Hadjidakis won on his only career nomination and died in 1994; I recently impressed a store clerk for knowing his entire repertoire while shopping in his father's native Crete. The biopic of Franz Lizst, SONG WITHOUT END, provided Dirk Bogarde with an opportunity at Hollywood stardom that didn't quite turn out, plus the film was a huge bore, but it did boast a musical score that earned MORRIS STOLOFF and HARRY SUKMAN Oscars for Best Scoring of a Musical Picture. Stoloff also won for Cover Girl (1944) and The Jolson Story (1946) and was nominated for Girls' School (1938), Ladies in Retirement, You'll Never Get Rich (both 1941), The Talk of the Town (1942), Commandos Strike At Dawn, Something To Shout About (both 1943), Address Unknown (1944), A Song To Remember, Tonight and Every Night (both 1945), Jolson Sings Again (1949), From Here To Eternity, The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T (both 1953), The Eddy Duchin Story (1956) and Fanny (1961). He died in 1980. Sukman was also nominated for Fanny (1961) and The Singing Nun (1966) and died in 1984. Otto Preminger's epic film on the formation of the state of Israel was something of a bust, attempting to be the Zero Dark Thirty of its time but far too fascinated with Paul Newman's pretty face, but ERNEST GOLD's score for EXODUS was one of its best attributes, one I still love listening to, and it deservedly won him his only Oscar for Scoring of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture. He was also nominated for On The Beach (1959), It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World (score and song, 1963) and The Secret of Santa Vittorio (1969). He died in 1999. MyOldAddiction.com
