BEST ACTRESS 1987: In her 1998 autobiographical book The First Time, actor-singer-eyeroll champion CHER said that in 1983, she, Meryl Streep and Mike Nichols went to a movie theatre that was playing the trailer for Silkwood ahead of that week's feature. The crowd cheered for everyone whose name came up on screen until the word Cher popped up, at which point the room burst out laughing; a year later, with her first Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe, the laughter was squelched and it was well known that Cher, at that point most famous for her adorable hippy duo with Sonny Bono and that marvelous variety show, was kicking ass on movie screens. Not being nominated for Mask three years later stung her, particularly considering the acclaim that came with that performance (including a Best Actress prize at Cannes), but in 1987 she won raves for her work in three high profile and successful films: Suspect (where she plays a lawyer. A LAWYER!), The Witches of Eastwick (in which she tells Jack Nicholson that he smells), and, of course, the eternal classic and one of my favourite all-time films, MOONSTRUCK, in which we're expected to believe that she needs to dye three gray hairs in order to be pretty enough to go out on a date (as one writer put it, making Cher accessible and amiable was a much bigger feat than that makeover). In Norman Jewison's masterpiece, the California-born singing superstar is fully convincing as Brooklyn Italian, playing a widow who decides to marry a boring mama's boy because happiness is less important than practicality, then has her plans blown by the romantic overtures of her fiance's brother, played by Nicolas Cage at the height of his sex appeal. John Patrick Shanley's script is brimming over with endlessly memorable dialogue ("How's the mother?" "She's dying but I can still hear her big mouth") and Cher delivers it with the kind of candor and directness that marks her best performances, her greatest quality as an actor has always been her manner of always seeming like she showed up on the set that day and this is just what was she had to say.
