BEST ACTRESS 1966: Four foreign actresses and one foreign-born American, including among them the first pair of sisters nominated together since de Havilland and Fontaine in 1941. Neither of the Redgrave girls had a shot at winning, one was in a film too light and the other too obscure, but Lynn's nomination for Georgy Girl and Vanessa's for Morgan (A Suitable Case For Treatment) announced their part in cinema's British invasion and marked the beginnings of two marvelous careers. This was also the era, up until the mid-seventies, in which you saw the highest frequency of foreign-language performances being nominated, in this case two in the Best Actress category with French superstar Anouk Aimee earning her sole career nomination for that movie with the Muzaak score that makes me want to kill myself, A Man And A Woman, and Russian actress Ida Kaminksa in the previous year's perfectly brittle Foreign Language Film winner from Czechoslovakia, The Shop On Main Street. All that said, after winning an Oscar for her performance in a tracheotomy (which came with a wicked cool scar), it must have been a great compliment to ELIZABETH TAYLOR to win a second award for acting. She and Richard Burton made headlines when their affair on the set of Cleopatra ended her marriage to Eddie Fisher (which was a scandal of its own) and turned them into a celebrity couple whose fame still has yet to be eclipsed. They made a number of films together, most of them terrible, but their collaboration on WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF still stands as their greatest accomplishment on film (that wonderful episode of the Lucy Show notwithstanding), and the role makes particular use of Taylor's greatest attributes. She's too young for the part, she was only in her late thirties and the white streaks in her hair and slight weight gain do nothing to hide this, but Taylor's fascinating combination of beautiful face and harsh, tinny voice, and her ability to be so glamorous while also appearing to be made of iron made her the perfect choice for the part.
