Today's review on MyOldAddiction.com, The Rise of Catherine The Great by #PaulCzinner starring #ElisabethBergner, "it's probably the only movie about Catherine the Great in which one wishes the whole thing was about Peter."

BEST MUSIC 1957: The Academy whittled down their categories this year, not separating the visual awards between black and white and colour films and only handing out two music Oscars, one for Scoring (original or otherwise) and one for Song. The first went to MALCOLM ARNOLD for getting that whistling tune stuck in our head in that year's Best Picture winner THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI (I learned it because it was used in Spaceballs, actually). Arnold was not present at the ceremony and his award was accepted on his behalf by composer Morris Stoloff; he won on his only career nomination and died in 2006. The Song Oscar category included some pretty popular hit records, including the title song from An Affair To Remember, Debbie Reynolds' signature tune "Tammy" and the song that would eventually become one of Nina Simone's finest pieces, "Wild Is The Wind". The Oscar went to the Chairman of the Board, as one of Frank Sinatra's most enduring tunes throughout his career was "ALL THE WAY" from the surprisingly good biopic of Joe E. Lewis, THE JOKER IS WILD. In the film, Ole' Blue Eyes manages a few tunes before gangsters literally tear his throat out, and the one he keeps coming back to is this lovely song by Oscar winners JAMES VAN HEUSEN and SAMMY CAHN. Van Heusen also won for "Swinging On A Star" (Going My Way, 1944), "High Hopes" (A Hole In The Head, 1959), "Call Me Irresponsible" (Papa's Delicate Condition, 1963) and was nominated for "Aren't You Glad You're You" (The Bells of St. Mary's), "Sleighride In July" (Belle of the Yukon, both 1945), "(Love Is) The Tender Trap" (The Tender Trap, 1955), "To Love and Be Loved" (Some Came Running, 1958), "The Second Time Around" (High Time, 1960), "Pocketful of Miracles" (Pocketful of Miracles, 1961), "My Kind of Town" (Robin and the 7 Hoods), "Where Love Has Gone" (Where Love Has Gone, both 1964), "Thoroughly Modern Millie" (Thoroughly Modern Millie, 1967) and "Star!" (Star!, 1968). He died in 1990.
