BEST MUSIC 1958: Adapting a stage musical to the big screen now frequently involves adding an original song in order to qualify for a song Oscar, a trend begun when FREDERICK LOEWE and ALAN JAY LERNER added the title song "GIGI" to Vincente Minnelli's adaptation of their hit show. Loewe was nominated again for the score and song of The Little Prince (1974) and died in 1988. Lerner also won Best Screenplay for An American In Paris (1951) and Gigi and was nominated for "Too Late Now" (Royal Wedding, 1951), The Little Prince (score and song, 1974) and Best Screenplay for My Fair Lady (1964). He died in 1986. ANDRE PREVIN, a noted composer and orchestrator whose recent obituary mainly focused on the fact that he was Woody Allen's late father-in-law, won the Musical Score Oscar for setting Gigi's songs within the orchestral score. He followed this first triumph with three more Oscars, for Porgy and Bess (1959), Irma La Douce (1963) and My Fair Lady (1964) and was nominated for Three Little Words (1950), Kiss Me Kate (1953), It's Always Fair Weather (1955), Elmer Gantry, Bells Are Ringing, "Faraway Part of Town" (Pepe, all 1960), "Song From Two For The Seesaw-Second Chance" (Two For the Seesaw, 1962), Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967) and Jesus Christ Superstar (1973). Despite the fact that John Sturges' attempt to adapt Hemingway's THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA to film fell flat (including casting Spencer Tracy as a man named Santiago), it featured various elements that were beautifully wrought, including James Wong Howe's stunning cinematography and the musical score by DIMITRI TIOMKIN, which won him his fourth Oscar and his third in the Best Dramatic or Comedy Score. Tiomkin previously won for High Noon (score and Song, 1952), The High and the Mighty (1954) and was also nominated for Mr. Smith Goes To Washington (1939), The Corsican Brothers (1942), The Moon and Sixpence (1943), The Bridge of San Luis Rey (1944), Champion (1949), "The High and the Mighty" (The High and the Mighty, 1954), Giant, "Friendly Persuasion-Thee I Love" (Friendly Persuasion, both 1956), "Wild Is The Wind" (Wild Is The Wind, 1957), "Strange Are the Ways of Love" (The Young Land, 1959),
