A standard police thriller plot is dressed up with a lot of florid filmmaking techniques, combining as many traditions of screwball comedy as of noirish detective stories and everything in between. The plot is kept to a bare minimum to place emphasis on the method of storytelling, it’s more or less the tale of two very different cops out to catch a killer and determined to shake up any witness to do it. There are a lot of fun individual action sequences, and the better ones are wisely saved for the end including an exciting chase on a commuter train, though the film is almost purely conceptual and won’t please anyone not willing to enjoy coasting along its slick and inventive surface.
