The magnificence of Asghar Farhadi travels to Spain but does not go far astray from his style of storytelling, as usual taking the unraveling of a dramatic mystery and using it to unearth the personal secrets and compromises hiding beneath it. The results are stellar as an excellentleaves her husband behind in Argentina to come for a visit to her home village in Spain for her younger sister’s wedding. The festivities are a rich array of pleasures until the switch is flipped and something terrifying happens: her teenage daughter is suddenly missing and no one has a clue why, then a ransom note comes in and the entire village is plunged into suspicion and fear. Cruz’s husband flies in while family friend takes the lead on investigating the matter, and in doing so kicks up a lot of unfinished business regarding his and Cruz’s past love affair and his ownership of vineyards that once belonged to her family. The details of each characters’ involvement in this story is complex and fascinating, but plays out in a spontaneous and captivating manner, as dramatically vibrant as the sunny location and the actors’ physical beauty. has a stunning supporting role as Bardem’s wife, providing her own compelling contribution to the spiderweb that spreads out as the ensemble tries to solve their tragedy.
