Miniature charmer by Aki Kaurismaki that begins when a young man, who spends his days sewing the children’s clothing that his mother boxes for shipment, has had enough of her nagging ways. Locking her up in a closet and hitting the road, he picks up rocker Matti Pellonpää and the two of them live an adventure, befriending two girls, one from Russia and one from Estonia, then head for the nearest bar or dance hall, board a ferry boat and accompany the ladies home. Filmed in delicately pretty black and white and blessed with the understated but sensitive performances that make Kaurismaki’s works so beloved by his devoted fans, the film will not blow anyone’s mind but is a worthwhile charmer for the mere hour it takes to watch.
