Turkey/France, 2006. Pyramide Films, Co Production, Imaj, NBC Film. Screenplay by Nuri Bilge Ceylan. Cinematography by Gokhan Tiryaki. Produced by Zeynep Ozbatur Atakan. Film Editing by Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Ayhan Ergürsel. Cannes Film Festival 2006. Toronto International Film Festival 2006.
Nuri Bilge Ceylan shoots in digital for the first time and the images are crisp and gorgeous in this subtle, sexy romantic drama. He himself stars with his real-life wife (Ebru Ceylan) as a troubled couple, he a professor and she a television producer, who are having difficulties with intimacy while on a sunny vacation. They go their separate ways, he taking up with a former lover, before he realizes the void in his life without her and goes to find her on the latest television show she is working on. It sounds simple in description, but the long slow takes of motionless tension are incredibly juicy, Ceylan as charismatic in front of the camera as he is wielding it, and the overall effect is palpably erotic without being overly graphic or exploitative.
