On Planet 51, little green men and women live in retro-fifties style neighbourhoods with their Geiger-inspired pet dogs, their young people obsessed with the possibility of life on other planets. This possibility becomes a reality when an Earthling astronaut (voiced by Dwayne Johnson, aka “The Rock”) lands in their backyard and immediately sets out to claim the “alien” place as his own. Bright, colourful animation and cute characters, not to mention a clever set-up, should make for something much more memorable, but the clever set-up is really all this one has going for it; the execution is only passable, and will amuse the kids while boring the adults. Still, it’s harmless fun, and the actors are having a good time with their characterizations.
