In The City (En La Ciudad)

(out of 5)

From Cesc Gay (Nico And Dani) comes this terrific ensemble drama about the lives of four couples in modern day Barcelona. One is a happily married, middle-class couple with a child and a beautiful home whose mother perfect calm is thrown for a loop when the wife reunites with a woman who shares her secret past. Another is an unhappy man who begins to realize that his theatrical costume designer wife is stepping out on him with another man. Then there’s a professor who is perhaps unwisely having an affair with his underaged student, and a woman who has just met what seems like the perfect guy but feels the need to make things up about him to her friends all the same. Gay’s screenplay doesn’t let us too far into these character’s lives, something that will frustrate some viewers, but this aloof attitude and the unresolved ending only adds to the natural, slice-of-life feel that the story engenders. Excellent acting by all, plus a cameo by .
