The makers of Shaun Of The Dead have returned with another satire that inverts a popular Hollywood genre, this time the buddy-cop action movie. Affable Simon Pegg plays an overachieving police officer whose superiors are tired of his outdoing every single member of the London police force and promote him to a higher position in a small country town to get rid of him. There his expertise is relegated to evicting minors from pubs and helping recover escaped swans from their estates, until a series of ‘accidental’ deaths have him hypothesizing a murder conspiracy that makes him the laughing stock of his provincial force. Is he just jaded from years in the dangerous city, or is there a serial killer in this quiet hamlet who is taking prominent citizens out one by one? Watching this hysterical film go from lovable pluck to absolute chaos is a highly entertaining experience, buoyed by devilishly funny dialogue, superb performances and a sturdy plot that, while lampooning overblown Hollywood action movies, is also a genuinely great action movie as well. Look for celebrity cameos by Steve Coogan, Cate Blanchett and Bill Nighy among others.
