Don’t believe what they say, Plan 9 From Outer Space is far from being the worst film of all time; this film, made by Ed Wood before his all-time sci-fi classic, is not nearly as much campy fun. Hired by a Z-level film company to make a movie about a recent headline-making post-operative transsexual, Wood instead created a huge mess of a film that dealt with his own transvestism (he loved to wear blonde wigs and angora sweaters). Dolores Fuller, Wood’s real-life girlfriend at the time, gives a pitifully bad performance (Sarah Jessica Parker tried to act as bad as her in Ed Wood but there’s just no sinking THAT low) as his onscreen girlfriend who discovers his “abnormality” and decides to live with him anyway; her climactic scene where she hands him her sweater is a campy delight. In between there’s inexplicable stock footage and Bela Lugosi talking about things that just make no sense. The whole mess is not only laughable, it’s a complete bore too.
