While not the heaviest on story exposition, this is a thoroughly heartfelt melodrama about a writer (Tony Chiu Wai Leung) living in a seedy hotel and enjoying a womanizing existence until a beautiful party girl (Ziyi Zhang) shows up and turns his life upside down. He writes a science-fiction story about a man who falls in love with an android that has similarities to Leung’s experiences with Zhang, a mysterious gambler (Li Gong) and the hotel manager’s lovestruck daughter. It’s one of the most gorgeous films you’ve ever seen and a worthy successor to In The Mood For Love, with which it has narrative ties.
