Nothing is what it seems in this cyberkinetic action thriller that grabs hold and never lets go. Keanu Reeves plays a bottomfeeding computer hacker who goes from zero to hero when he pursues the myth of a world-class hack expert (Laurence Fishburne) and finds him. Discovering that he is a saviour of prophecy, Reeves ends up attempting to rescue mankind from evil computers bent on dominating the planet and using humans for their own personal gain. Andy and Larry (now Lana) Wachowski show major skill and finesse in directing this fascinating story, beginning with a brilliant screenplay and topped off by classy performances, beautiful production design and cutting edge visual effects that look great and never take away from the movie’s dramatic power. Carrie-Anne Moss has a great starmaking role as the hip chick who helps Reeves on his quest, and Hugo Weaving is delectably menacing as the villainous machines’ human representation. You’ll love falling through the looking glass with this one.
