Fun, rebellious comedy that pokes fun at our ignorance around sexuality and, specifically, the AIDS epidemic. Rosa Von Praunheim combines a delightful collection of political agitators, loopy nurses and snoopy reporters, all of whom examine the AIDS panic and deal with it in ways that are so rowdy that they might seem offensively crass to some viewers. What others might get out of it, however, is von Praunheim’s insistence that we challenge ourselves to see this issue as one that involves us all, not just those we feel are worthy of our moral judgments. A fun story and a deeply felt message combine for something that is not the last word is political filmmaking, but is definitely a memorable statement. It would still be years before North America would deal with the subject in any mainstream films.
