Johnny Depp hilariously sashays his way through another overblown mess in this third pirate adventure inspired by the Disneyland ride. Picking up where the last chapter left off (the two films were actually filmed together), the film has crew members Geoffrey Rush, Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom sailing to the ends of the earth to find Depp and bring him to a meeting of pirate leaders. They intend to save themselves from the evil Lord Beckett (Tom Hollander) who longs to rule the pirate world himself, but it’s no surprise to say that their journey is fraught with complications. Like its predecessor, it makes absolutely no sense most of the time, and is far too long, but I suppose if you allow your brain to shut off long enough you might enjoy it. Just don’t try to figure out who is loyal to whom (it changes with each scene, and not skilfully), what their motivation is or why you should care about anything other than being impressed by the magnificent makeup and visual effects and laughing at Depp’s continued brilliance.
