Stellar film noir features a terrific lead performance by as a former hood who has reformed and is now living in a small town and romancing a beautiful young woman ( ). When Mitchum’s past catches up with him, Huston isn’t afraid to find out the truth, following him to his meeting with a former crime boss () with whom he has unfinished business regarding stolen money and a femme fatale ( ). Plenty of murky locales, clever plot twists and seedy personalities, all beautifully photographed and twisted to a perfect fever pitch of genre indulgence.
