Argentina, 1999. Instituto Nacional de Cine y Artes Audiovisuales, Lita Stantic Producciones, Matanza Cine. Screenplay by Pablo Trapero. Cinematography by Cobi Migliora. Produced by Lita Stantic, Pablo Trapero. Production Design by Andres Tambornino. Film Editing by Nicolas Goldbart.
Grainy, black and white slice of social realism in which director Pablo Trapero himself appears as a construction worker dealing with the realities of aging. He hangs out with his friends, visits his doctor, deals with his grown children and attempts a minor romance with a convenience store owner. Things go sour when he loses his job and must try, in his middle age, to build his life back up from the beginning. Trapero’s feature film debut shows a great talent for naturalism, but there’s very little to really hold you in your seat. The situations are believable but never particularly interesting, and the low burn of intensity eventually wears on your nerves.
