USA, 1998. Castle Rock Entertainment, PolyGram Filmed Entertainment, Westerly Films. Screenplay by Whit Stillman. Cinematography by John Thomas. Produced by Whit Stillman. Music by Mark Suozzo. Production Design by Ginger Tougas. Costume Design by Sarah Edwards. Film Editing by Andrew Hafitz, Jay Pires.
True to the Whit Stillman mode of filmmaking, this film features young people who talk a lot. Kate Beckinsale and Chloe Sevigny are both excellent in lead roles as two girls, one hip and nasty, the other sweet and comfortable, who go back and forth between witnessing and participating in what Stillman thinks is a momentous change in human history. The best performance comes from Jennifer Beals, naturally the perfect person to have in a movie that capitalizes on the height of the eighties.
