A low-budget, independent, gay-themed comedy whose characters are appealing and whose dialogue is actually clever, this one is a surprise delight from beginning to end. Jenn is a yoga instructor whose prospects for romance are going nowhere fast, and her best friend Matt runs a comic book store and has not gotten over his ex-boyfriend. When they decide they both want to be parents but cannot wait any longer to be in the right kind of relationship to make it happen, they decide to have a child together and, in a fit of romantic craziness, resolve to make it happen the old fashioned way. This causes complications when they both start dating again, but what it does not inspire is the kind of mundane back-biting or hateful melodrama of a movie like The Next Best Thing. These people genuinely like each other and find their way out of tricky situations with panache, the script highlighted by witty dialogue and the grungy production values well overcome by appealing performances (Jenn Harris is particularly fun as the female lead).
