Kevin Smith’s modern character piece is a feast for those who love great relationship studies. Ben Affleck plays a comic book artist who finds himself thrown into the deep end when he falls in love with a lesbian (Joey Lauren Adams) who also does the same work. She eventually finds a connection with him that leads her to love him back, but soon his petty frustrations and insecurities screw things up. Critics got a big kick out of this film and praised it highly, but I think they were just reacting to seeing young people talk about sex frankly on screen more than they ever got to see in their day. To be fair, however, the dialogue is excellent and written with ease. Jason Lee is marvelous as Affleck’s best friend, and the overall result is affecting and touching.
