Insomnia (1997)

(out of 5)

plays a Swedish detective visiting Norway to head up the investigation of a murder involving a young woman in this beautifully shot cop thriller by first-time director Erik Skjoldbaerg. In a land very close to the north pole, and in a season where there is absolutely no time of day without sunlight, the detective finds his mind being psychologically undone by his surroundings, and soon the line between who is good and who is evil becomes so blurred as to thoroughly disturb even the most casual viewer. Long before you discover the identity of the culprit you’ll be much more terrified of the protagonist, and thanks to this shocking twist the movie has nothing but surprises to offer.
