Sweden, 1967.  Sandrews.  Screenplay by Vilgot Sjoman.  Cinematography by .  Produced by .  Music by .  Film Editing by .

One of the most hotly controversial films ever released in North America, though you’d be surprised when you watch it now. Other than a few scenes of frontal nudity (male and female) and some simulated sex, it’s mostly just a formless meditation on Swedish politics that follows a young woman as she explores the social situations around her. Interviewing strangers on the street about the class system in Sweden, this quasi-documentary never achieves anything particularly interesting in either its exploration of current politics or attitudes towards sexuality. Director Vilgot Sjoman had so much footage to work with that he ended up creating a second film, I Am Curious (Blue) a year later; both were seized by customs when brought over to the pre-Deep Throat United States, and their admission into the country was hotly debated in Congress.

The Criterion Collection:  #180
