Hugh Jackman in X-Men.

Elegant and adventurous adaptation of the famous comic book series and television show. Presumably an opening chapter for a series of films to follow, the film isn’t very strong on its own as it does little more than establish its characters and then offer up a few obstacles towards the end of the film. What it does have to recommend it, though, is a fantastic cast including Anna Paquin,  and the exceptional , all of them led by duelling nemeses Ian McKellen and .  Australian newcomer Hugh Jackman (filling in for Dougray Scott who was injured in a motorcycle stunt for Mission: Impossible 2) is not really charismatic enough for his role as the main hero, Wolverine, but he doesn’t embarrass himself either.
