Eddie Murphy is brilliant in this hilarious remake of the Jerry Lewis classic. He plays a pleasingly plump university science professor who develops a potion that turns him into a svelt and sexy ladies man named Buddy Love, a man with razor-sharp wit and a talent for winning women over with a single glance. As if two magnificent performances weren’t enough, an added bonus is that Murphy also plays the various members of his character’s family, including both his parents and grandmother. The film is well directed and never stops being funny, but the most impressive aspect is the steam-engine energy on display by Murphy and the exceptional makeup by Rick Baker that makes it seem all the more real.
