Bil’s rating (out of 5): BB.5. USA, 1940. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Screenplay by Aurania Rouverol, Tom Seller, Annalee Whitmore. Cinematography by Charles Lawton Jr.,Sidney Wagner. Produced by J.J. Cohn. Music by David Snell. Production Design by Cedric Gibbons. Film Editing by Harold F. Kress.
Routine Andy Hardy adventure has its star Mickey Rooney falling in love with a society-page heiress while continuing to ignore plucky and spirited lass Judy Garland, who continues to be one step behind him. Other than the fact that it is traditionally wholesome family fare, which will be an area of appeal for some viewers, the film is too predictable to be enchanting, and what’s more doesn’t allow for Garland to sing many songs and so amounts to a giant cheat.
