Apparently medical school doesn’t keep you busy enough: a group of students find that taking themselves to the brink of death gives them insights to the great beyond. It also gives them strange visions relating to their own long-kept memories and childhood experiences that start to seep into their waking life as they go further and further in their dangerous experimentation. The ensemble cast is highly likeable and there are quite a few genuine thrills in this exploitative science-fiction film that is not without its genuine sense of fun. This was the last time you’d see Julia Roberts before Pretty Woman made her a huge movie star; the rest of the cast is rounded out by Kevin Bacon, Kiefer Sutherland, Oliver Platt and William Baldwin.
