After Stonewall (1999)

Bil’s rating (out of 5):   BBB.5.

USA, 1999.  After Stonewall, Center for Independent Documentary.  Produced by .  Music by .

The events chronicled in Before Stonewall are continued by this highly informative documentary, which seeks to explore the political and social condition of gays and lesbians in America after the Stonewall riots of 1969 ignited the Gay Rights movement. Footage of the burgeoning of urban gay culture in the seventies, the right-wing backlash of the eighties (complete with  trying to save our children) and the devastation of the AIDS crisis all lead up to the film’s present day, where Will & Grace is the most popular show on television but Will never gets to go on a date. Like its predecessor, the film tries to cover too much ground in too short a period of time, but it is stacked with memorable footage and some very interesting historical detail.
