Lovely romantic film by Patricia Rozema about a pent-up theology professor (Pascale Bussières) who has an affair with a gorgeous, exotic female circus performer (Rachael Crawford) and finds true love. Her religious sentiments on homosexuality, the challenge of a changed identity and her relationship with her equally upstanding boyfriend (Henry Czerny) are suddenly issues that melt away in the face of genuine romance, but there are still challenges outside their relationship to be faced. Rozema’s script and direction are so beautifully simple that the emotional qualities of the film come out strongest, aided by beautiful photography and excellent performances from the entire cast. Bussieres is especially amiable, and the scenes involving the highly original circus act that Crawford is a part of are a sensual delight.
