Julia Roberts was already well into filming this wife-abuse thriller when Pretty Woman was released in theatres and made her a huge box-office star, so you could imagine the producers’ surprise when they found out they had a gold mine on their hands. She plays an abused wife to a mean ogre () who decides once and for all to finally leave him. Previous attemps to get away resulted in even worse treatment for her, so this time she fakes her own death in order to make a clean break and get her off his tail for good. Unfortunately, she’s not smart enough about cleaning up all the clues she leaves behind, and before you can turn off all the lights in her new house, she’s got a big problem on her hands. The star gives a very dedicated performance, but it’s still just a trashy thriller based on an equally trashy novel that only got better when Jennifer Lopez redid it as Enough and gave it a less wimpy ending.
