The other half of the original Grindhouse double feature that has been extended and released separately on DVD. Robert Rodriguez’s zombie-themed creature feature is far superior to Tarantino’s Death Proof, quicker-paced and devoid of the smug self-awareness that made the other film so irritating. In this one, Rose McGowan is marvelous as a go-go dancer who becomes one of a group of survivors after her small town is overtaken by flesh-eating, undead creatures. Cast members Marley Shelton, Josh Brolin, Freddy Rodríguez, and Michael Biehn all shine in various roles as victims, heroes or ghouls in a snappy, often hilarious tribute to bad B-grade horror flicks of yore. The film probably worked better in its theatrical version; the DVD cut doesn’t need to be so long, but it’s never boring and the effects are terrific.
