Director Robert Rodriguez virtually remade his debut independent film El Mariachi when its success allowed him a genuine budget to work with. Antonio Banderas is the guitar-playing gunslinger who enters a Mexican town in search of revenge for the loss of his great love. He meets sexy Salma Hayek, they hit it off, she helps him find the bad guys. Joaquim de Almeida makes a great villain in this colourful little action film that also features cameos by Quentin Tarantino and Cheech Marin, but the more violent scenes tend to get too noisy and last too long (Thanks to Pulp Fiction, holding a gun in both hands and firing simultaneously is de rigeur for action movies).
