More a remake than a sequel, this cult favourite by Sam Raimi takes his original Evil Dead and improves it with a bigger budget. Bruce Campbell is the super-chinned hero who ventures out to a cabin with his girlfriend and accidentally calls up evil from a mysterious book left there by a mysterious professor. After the demons that arise claim his lady love, they go after Campbell too, but not without a fight from him. The mayhem that ensues when the professor’s daughter shows up with family in tow, including body parts flying everywhere and demons running amok, is as deliciously funny as it is scary. Raimi’s direction never lacks for pace or ingenuity, and Campbell’s performance is rife with self-effacing aplomb.
