Jessica Lange deservedly won an Academy Award for her terrific performance as the near-nymphomaniacal wife of a career army man (Tommy Lee Jones) who must fight to save her husband when he is involved in a coverup involving nuclear arms testing. It’s got a lot of great dramatic impact, thanks mostly to Lange’s work, but the screenplay feels more like a television movie of the week than a feature film. This was Tony Richardson’s last film as director before his untimely death, and because of Orion studio’s going bankrupt two years earlier was left on the shelf until its eventual 1994 release.
Academy Award: Best Actress (Jessica Lange)
