Taking place right after the original’s shocking ending, this film has Charlton Heston disappear beneath a cave and another astronaut (James Franciscus) search the planet for him. What Franciscus finds on his journey is more contact with the ape people (Kim Hunter returns as the kindly doctor) and a weird underground cult of post-apocalyptic, corroding humans who worship a bomb (Victor Buono appears in a career-shaming role). Absolutely ridiculous, though some might find it fun precisely because of how cheesy it is.
