Alexander Payne made a brilliant debut with this wonderful black comedy that deals with a real political hot potato, abortion. When an inhalant-abusing pregnant woman (Laura Dern in one of her most electrifying performances) decides to terminate, she is stopped by an anti-abortion group led by Swoosie Kurtz and Mary Kay Place and encouraged to see her way out of it. Eventually she finds herself in the hands of pro-choicers who tell her that her body is her own to govern and she shouldn’t be forced to bring a life into the world that she can’t properly care for. Tippi Hedren has a cameo appearance.
