Little Shop Of Horrors

(out of 5)

The tremendously popular Broadway musical, based on the Roger Corman horror film of the same name, reaches the screen with fantastic results.  is heroically geeky as a florist’s assistant who finds a strange plant growing from the ground after a solar eclipse. Naming it Audrey II after the girl of his dreams (), Moranis is rather surprised when the plant turns out to have a meat-eating appetite that won’t be satisfied except by the consumption of human flesh. Meanwhile, the human Audrey finds herself falling in love with this adorable nerd, unaware of that she is the desired feast of the constantly growing plant. Delightful songs by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman and ferociously committed performances, especially by Greene (recreating her Broadway role), make for one of the best musicals of the decade.
