Comedic romp through the world of con artists is the lighter sibling to The Grifters. Michael Caine plays a world class con man who swindles royals out of their jewels with fake sob stories until he meets his match in small-time grifter Steve Martin. The two of them realize that the coastal Mediterranean town that they are both working is too small to accommodate them both, and so make a bet that will result in the loser leaving for somewhere else. They team up to see who can extract the most amount of money from an heiress (Glenne Headly) who is on vacation and totally vulnerable to their tricks. The performances sparkle and the ending is a real treat! One of the few opportunities to watch the magnificent Ms. Headly work her effortless magic, and the two leading men do quite a right job of it themselves.
Golden Globe Award Nomination: Best Actor-Musical/Comedy (Michael Caine)
