Beautiful drama from Sweden adapted from a story by British novelist H.E. Bates (Feast of July, A Month By The Lake). A lonely farmer takes out a newspaper ad in search of a pretty, young housekeeper to help him with his farm, now that his mother has passed and he has no one to tend the house for him. The respondent is a beautiful blonde (Helena Bergström) who enters his heart quite soon after she enters his kitchen, and she in return falls in love with this sweet, gentle man as well. Paradise is not forever, unfortunately (and never is in a Bates story), and trouble comes in the form of the farmer’s jealous best friend (Johan Widerberg) who threatens to expose volatile secrets about each of the two of them to each other. This gorgeously photographed and impeccably scored melodrama does not end in unforgettable tragedy, but is emotionally satisfying and very touching.
