Generously humorous comedy that styles itself as a Scandinavian Odd Couple. Elling is a grown man whose overprotective mother has just died, leaving him at the mercy of the world around him. Unable to cope, he is placed in a sanitarium and rooms with a boorish oaf who is obsessed with losing his virginity. When the two are released into the world as “sane”, they get an apartment together and try to see if they can find fit into society. Watching them do this is at turns difficult, touching and rewarding, brought to life by excellent performance, sensitive direction and an intelligent script.
