Deliciously tacky movie version of John Cameron Mitchell‘s brilliant Broadway show that is pulled off just as impressively on film. Telling the story of an “internationally ignored” rock star transsexual who, following a botched sex-change operation, now has the “angry inch” of the title, Mitchell as director uses gorgeous animated sequences, an unforgettable song score and just the right touches of comedy and pathos to let us know how Hedwig travelled from East Berlin to America only to have all her songs stolen from her by her great love, international rock star Tommy Gnosis (Michael Pitt). The highlight of the film is the fantastic collection of songs written by Stephen Trask, brought to life exquisitely by Mitchell’s fiery, tour de force performance. Watch it or you’ll be sorry.
