Original title: En Kvinnas Ansikte
Sweden, 1938. Svensk Filmindustri. Screenplay by Gosta Stevens, based on the play Il Etait Une Fois by Francis de Croisset. Cinematography by Ake Dahlqvist. Music by Eric Bengtson. Production Design by Arne Akermark. Film Editing by Oscar Rosander.
A horribly scarred woman (Ingrid Bergman) takes her anger out on the world by blackmailing innocent people. Just before beginning work on a job that involves kidnapping and murdering a small child for his family’s giant fortune, a doctor performs surgery on her that restores her beauty and gives her a new outlook on life. Posing as the child’s governess, her position goes from kidnapper to heroine when she decides to save the life of the first person to truly love her. Most interest in this film will be mainly to see Bergman’s work from Sweden before her move to Hollywood. She’s fantastic, but the plot is little more than a soapy melodrama. Remade three years later with Joan Crawford.
