Gay Sex In The 70s

This highly enjoyable documentary takes a nostalgic trip back to the golden age of promiscuity, from the post-Stonewall years leading up to the outbreak of AIDS in 1981. It was a time when gay men shed the shackles of homophobia that had been thrust upon them and joined in the fun of the Free Love generation, making a political stand for their right to be visible and be taken seriously. Director Joseph Lovett includes interviews with various members of the generation (including himself) as well as beautiful photographs from the time that show New York’s prime meeting spots for casual trysts, plus some deliciously sexy footage of scantily clad men enjoying the freedom on their minds. Of course, it wouldn’t be a good documentary if Lovett didn’t also mention the downsides of the era, including some very inconvenient STDs being spread around as well as the dangerous reliance on recreational drugs. Even in you actually weren’t there, the photos of bathhouses with Bette Midler performing on stage and clips of Fire Island beaches, among many other treats, will make you wistful. It gives us a kinky, satisfying jolt back to a time before the gay community had its physical and political survival threatened by AIDS; it also reminds us of a time before the community’s rising economic influence saw its identity swallowed up by the corporate mentality that has ruined everything else that’s fun.
