It’s a parallel universe where gay is the norm and straight is the oppressed minority. In Athens, happily-paired same-sex couples go about making their wedding plans with ease and delight while male-female pairings are relegated to underground bars and general ignorance. Imagine how very difficult this makes life for Giannis when his dads keep trying to set him up with a nice boy but he is making eyes at a girl at the restaurant where he works. This comedy with a social message hidden not too deep beneath its premise is somewhat amateurish in tone–the fact that a gay world means a silly world would be easier to take if the director could decide whether or not he was laughing with or at his characters–but it also features a lot of really high points. An attractive cast, terrific jokes and even remakes of old Greek films, homo-style (Cacoyannis’ Stella is now Stellios). The ending serves to cap the joke with some much-appreciated poignancy.
