Two brothers compete on the race track as much as they do in daily life: Ricky Schroder is the wayward son who comes back from reform school and takes to running on the suggestion of his Straight-A brother (Brad Pitt) who also enjoys the sport. His increasing ability is at odds with his self-destructive nature, as well as creating more enmity between him and his sibling than was already there. Carrie Snodgress is excellent as the boys’ concerned mother, and while the film doesn’t exactly work from fresh material, the strong performances by all involved keeps it believable and sometimes touching. Audiences will be drawn to it mostly to see a pre-stardom Pitt, but they’ll get more than that out of the experience.
