USA, 1994. Morgan Creek Entertainment Group. Story by Jack Bernstein, Screenplay by Jack Bernstein, Tom Shadyac, Jim Carrey. Cinematography by Julio Macat. Produced by James G. Robinson. Music by Ira Newborn. Production Design by William A. Elliott. Costume Design by Bobbie Read. Film Editing by Don Zimmerman.
The film that made Jim Carrey a superstar is a silly comedy but one filled with many laughs that would eventually become the hallmark of his crude humour. He plays a goofy, oddly-coiffed private detective who specializes in cases involving members of the animal kingdom. He is called onto the scene when the Miami Dolphins’ famous mascot is kidnapped and held for ransom, but hard ball authority Sean Young is determined to keep him off the case. The inconsequential nature of the plot, not to mention an offensively homophobic joke involving Young’s character, are drawbacks, but it’s still a hell of a lot funnier than its sequel.
