Spirited modern adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew that has Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles playing the two seemingly incompatible lovers who are obviously perfect for each other. When Bianca’s dad won’t let her go to a party with her boyfriend unless her older sister Kat comes along, Bianca and her boyfriend decide to cook up a scheme to get the seemingly single-and-satisfied Kat out on a date. What ends up happening, of course, is that Kat resists, softens, falls in love with the guy and gets her heart broken, all in perfect order. The wit on display here, plus the genuine interest on the writing and directing teams’ part in having fun, makes this one a real winner and worth a watch from anyone of any age. Allison Janney has a wonderful cameo as the oddball guidance councillor of the girls’ high school.
