Eric Stoltz is injured in a hiking accident and ends up paralyzed from the waist down, suddenly thrust into a world of nurses, physiotherapy and a wide variety of fellow patients who are also going through the same shock. His girlfriend (Helen Hunt), a married woman with whom he is having an affair, sticks by him, but there’s no avoiding the strain it puts on their relationship. Stoltz is a revelation in the role, while Wesley Snipes and William Forsythe give terrific support as his fellow paraplegics who will use any salve to heal the pain of their respective losses. Neal Jimenez’s screenplay, based on his own personal experiences with the same injury and subsequent disability, is top of the heap in this touching, funny and unforgettable male counterpart to John Sayles’s masterpiece Passion Fish.
